Michael Healy

Executive Director, Author & Publisher Relations, Copyright Clearance Center

Michael Healy is currently the Executive Director (Author and Publisher Relations) at the Copyright Clearance Center. Prior to joining CCC, Michael was Executive Director of The Book Rights Registry, where he was responsible for establishing the organization to be the lead body in the administration of the Google Book Settlement. Michael was also the Executive Director of the Book Industry Study Group (BISG), a New York-based non-profit membership organization dedicated to improving the efficiency and the effectiveness of the U.S. book industry through the development and maintenance of standards, research, education and information.

Before moving to the United States in 2006, Michael worked for more than 20 years in the publishing industry in the UK, spending most of that time in senior editorial, sales and distribution roles in digital publishing. He was Editorial Director at Nielsen Book Services, Editorial Director of Chadwyck-Healey (now part of ProQuest) and European Sales and Operations Director for SilverPlatter Information (now part of WoltersKluwer Health). Early in his career, Michael was a librarian and worked for The British Council where his responsibilities included the implementation of library technology systems in many of the Council’s libraries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

For much of his career, Michael has been closely involved in the development of standards for the international book trade, and is particularly associated with standards for metadata, product information and electronic commerce. He has led many international standards groups. He has been Chairman of the International ISBN Agency, a Director of the International DOI Foundation, and he led the international ISO committee that developed ISBN-13. He was also a member of the ISO committees that developed the International Standard Text Code and the International Standard Name Identifier and was for many years a member of the ONIX International Steering Committee. Prior to moving to the United States, Michael was a board member of Book Industry Communication, the UK standards body for the book trade.
