Joe Mangan
Joseph J. Mangan is the COO of The Perseus Books Group whose mission is to enable independent publishers to reach their potential, whether those publishers are owned, joint ventures or clients served by the group. Publishers Weekly named Perseus Publisher of the Year and described it as “arguably the most important independent publishing company in the nation.”
In September 2008, under Joe’s guidance, the company launched Constellation, the book industry’s leading digital service for independent publishers. This was followed in 2009 and 2010 by ever expanding services under Constellation, and a fundamental transformation of the company’s capabilities to better compete and prosper in an increasingly digital publishing industry. During this time, the company also formed joint venture partnerships with The Daily Beast founded by Tina Brown and The Weinstein Company founded by Harvey Weinstein, both of which bring multi-media and multi-format content to bear in publishing.
Also during Joe’s tenure as COO, the company acquired and integrated Client Distribution Services, Consortium, Publishers Group West and The Avalon Publishing Group, becoming the leading provider of services to independent publishers. During this same time, the company published many bestsellers including the #1 New York Times bestsellers Friday Night Lights by H.G. Bissinger, Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin and What Happened by Scott McClellan.
Today, The Perseus Books Group publishes books through member publishers Avalon Travel, Basic Books, Da Capo Press, Running Press, Seal Press, Vanguard Press and Westview Press and through JV partnerships with PublicAffairs and The Nation Institute as well as the JVs with The Weinstein Company and The Daily Beast. And the group provides sales, distribution and digital services to more than 300 independent publishers through Consortium, Publishers Group West and Perseus Distribution.
Prior to joining Perseus, Joe Mangan was a Managing Director at Razorfish where he was responsible for all of the company’s activities in the Northeastern United States.
